V-Ray Render Farm Guide 2026: Host Apps, CPU vs GPU and Cloud Options
V-Ray CPU and GPU • Chaos Cloud • Managed farms
Choosing a V-Ray render farm starts with two questions. Which host app built the scene? Does it render with V-Ray CPU or V-Ray GPU? Chaos Cloud is run by V-Ray’s developer. It renders directly from V-Ray for 3ds Max, Maya, SketchUp, Rhino, Revit, Cinema 4D and other hosts. Managed farms such as GarageFarm, RebusFarm, Ranch Computing and Super Renders Farm all list V-Ray. Coverage is widest in 3ds Max and Cinema 4D. A remote GPU workstation such as iRender suits V-Ray GPU jobs. You choose the card and keep your own setup.
- Host app first: a V-Ray render farm must support both your host application and your exact V-Ray build.
- Chaos Cloud: renders V-Ray from 3ds Max, Maya, SketchUp, Rhino, Revit, Houdini, Cinema 4D and other hosts. It bills in Chaos Credits: 30,000 credits for $625 or 60,000 for $1,050 per year, as listed in November 2026.
- Managed farms: GarageFarm, RebusFarm, Ranch Computing, Super Renders Farm and Fox Renderfarm list V-Ray. Coverage is widest in 3ds Max and Cinema 4D.
- CPU or GPU: the render mode set in the scene decides the hardware. A V-Ray GPU job needs GPU nodes or a GPU workstation.
- Newer GPUs: Puget Systems tested at launch (January 2025). The RTX 5090 was about 38% faster than the RTX 4090 in V-Ray GPU (RTX mode).
Last updated: November 6, 2026. Host support was read from each company’s own pages on that date.
Forty interior stills, a client review at nine, and V-Ray says two hours per frame on your workstation. Almost every farm says it supports V-Ray, yet a job can still fail on arrival because the farm does not carry your host app, your V-Ray build, or the render mode you set up. This V-Ray render farm guide sorts the options by those three checks.
1. Which V-Ray render farm supports your host app?
Host coverage is where V-Ray services differ most. Chaos Cloud covers the widest list because it belongs to the V-Ray developer, while each managed farm carries a narrower set of hosts.
V-Ray host support by provider
Which host applications each provider lists for V-Ray. Yes means available, On request means it must be provisioned first.
| Host app | Chaos Cloud | GarageFarm | RebusFarm | Ranch Computing | Super Renders Farm | Remote workstation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3ds Max | Yes | Yes | Listed | Listed | Yes | You install it |
| Cinema 4D | Yes | Yes | Listed | Listed | Yes | You install it |
| SketchUp | Yes | Yes | Yes (.vrscene) | Not listed | On request | You install it |
| Rhino | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not listed | On request | You install it |
| Maya | Yes | Yes | Listed | Listed | Yes | You install it |
| Revit | Yes | Yes (V-Ray Standalone) | Listed | Not listed | Not listed | You install it |
Yes: the host and V-Ray are listed together on the provider’s page. Listed: both appear on the provider’s pages without an explicit pairing, so confirm with support. Not listed: the host does not appear on the provider’s software page. Fox Renderfarm lists V-Ray for 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, Blender, Nuke and Unreal Engine on its V-Ray page.
2. V-Ray CPU or V-Ray GPU on a farm?
V-Ray renders in CPU, GPU or hybrid mode, according to Chaos, and the mode you set in the scene decides which hardware the farm must provide. CPU jobs need many cores and plenty of RAM, while GPU jobs need enough VRAM on every card to hold the whole scene.
Two GPU details catch people out. VRAM does not combine across cards without NVLink, which consumer cards such as the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 lack, so a scene that overflows one card overflows all of them. Speed also rises with newer cards: in Puget Systems’ launch testing (January 2025), the RTX 5090 was about 38% faster than the RTX 4090 in V-Ray GPU (RTX mode). For architecture-specific trade-offs between the two modes, see V-Ray GPU vs CPU for architecture.
3. Which V-Ray cloud option fits which job?
For most still batches and animations, a managed farm or Chaos Cloud is the lower-effort choice. A remote GPU workstation earns its place when the job depends on plugins, versions or interactive work that a managed farm cannot reproduce.
Which V-Ray cloud option fits which job
Usual fit for common V-Ray jobs, with the reason.
| Job | Usually fits | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Many V-Ray CPU stills or an animation in 3ds Max | Managed CPU farm | Frames spread across many nodes with no setup |
| V-Ray from SketchUp, Rhino or Revit | Chaos Cloud, GarageFarm or RebusFarm | These hosts have the narrowest farm coverage |
| V-Ray GPU interiors that need 24GB to 32GB of VRAM per card | Remote GPU workstation or a GPU farm | You choose the exact card and VRAM |
| Scenes with Forest Pack, RailClone or other plugins | Farm that lists the plugin, or a remote workstation | Missing plugins are the top cause of broken V-Ray output |
| Iterating on lighting with a client watching | Remote GPU workstation | Interactive rendering needs a live session |
On remote workstations, including iRender, you rent a whole machine with RTX 4090 or RTX 5090 cards, install your host app and V-Ray, and use your own license. The service lists RTX 4090 from $8.20 per hour and RTX 5090 from $10.80 per hour as of November 6, 2026. Billing continues until the machine is shut down, so an idle machine left on overnight still costs money. iRender’s pricing page lists its data center as Uptime Tier III with ISO 27001, ISO 20000 and ISO 9001 certifications, and the company provides an NDA document for projects that need one (checked November 2026).
4. How do you avoid failed V-Ray jobs on a render farm?
Most failed V-Ray farm jobs come from assets and versions, not hardware. Collect every texture, proxy and IES file with the scene, keep paths relative, and match the V-Ray build the provider lists. Our guide to missing textures and assets on render farms lists the common traps, and cleaning V-Ray noise helps you set sampling before paying for hours.
5. How do V-Ray CPU and GPU jobs map to cloud options?
V-Ray offers CPU, GPU and hybrid rendering, and the engine chosen in the scene decides which hardware the job needs. V-Ray CPU jobs fit any managed farm that lists your host, because those farms run large CPU node pools. V-Ray GPU jobs need GPU nodes, so check that the farm lists GPU rendering for your host before you submit. Figure 5.1 shows the usual mapping.
Interactive work is the exception. Look development with V-Ray GPU and IPR benefits from a machine you can drive directly, which is where a remote GPU workstation fits. You install the host app and V-Ray yourself and pay for the hours the machine runs.
Whatever the route, test one frame in the same engine and at the final resolution before sending the full range. A frame that fails or looks different on the farm costs far less to fix early than a whole sequence rendered with a missing texture.

7. FAQ
Is Chaos Cloud better than a render farm for V-Ray?
The answer turns on your host app and how you prefer to pay. Chaos Cloud comes from the V-Ray developer. It supports the widest list of V-Ray hosts, including SketchUp, Rhino and Revit, which many farms do not cover. It is billed in Chaos Credits sold in annual packs. Managed farms bill per usage and may support plugins or workflows Chaos Cloud does not. Compare both on a test frame from your own scene.
Do render farms support V-Ray GPU?
Some do. V-Ray GPU needs GPU nodes with enough VRAM per card. Not every farm offers GPU hardware for every V-Ray host. GarageFarm states that CPU and GPU nodes are selectable. On a remote GPU workstation you pick the card yourself. Examples are an RTX 4090 with 24GB or an RTX 5090 with 32GB. Check that your V-Ray version supports the GPU generation you rent.
Does a multi-GPU machine give V-Ray more VRAM?
No. Without NVLink, each card must hold the full scene. Consumer cards such as the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 do not have NVLink. A machine with four RTX 4090 cards renders faster than one card. Its usable VRAM for a single scene is still 24GB. If your scene overflows, reduce texture sizes and use proxies. You can also move to a card with more VRAM or render on the CPU.
Which V-Ray version do render farms accept?
Each provider publishes its own list, and the newest V-Ray release is often added with a delay. RebusFarm lists V-Ray up to 7.0 on its SketchUp page. GarageFarm lists V-Ray 3.4 to 7 for Rhino. Super Renders Farm lists V-Ray 6 and 7. Check the list for your exact build before a deadline job. Or save a copy of the scene for the version the farm supports.
Can I mix V-Ray CPU and GPU frames in one animation?
It is safer not to. V-Ray CPU and V-Ray GPU are separate render engines, and Chaos documents features that are supported differently between them, so frames can differ in noise, shading or supported effects. Keep one engine for the whole sequence, test a few frames on the farm in the same mode, and only then submit the full range. If you need GPU speed, convert the scene and check materials before the deadline rather than halfway through a sequence.
