Karma XPU runs on the RTX 5090 without needing a special Blackwell build, which sets it apart from renderers that had to ship new versions before the card appeared at all. What catches people out instead is the driver and a shader compilation error. On some RTX 5090 setups Karma XPU fails with a message about not being able to create the OptiX pipeline, and the workaround shared on the SideFX forum is to set KARMA_XPU_OPTIX_FORCE_OPTIXIR to 1 in houdini.env. Beyond that, check the NVIDIA driver branch against the system requirements for your Houdini build, because specific branches are recommended and at least one is called out to avoid. Karma XPU also supports only CPU and NVIDIA OptiX devices, and memory is never pooled between them.

Does Karma XPU need a special build for the RTX 5090?

No. Karma XPU renders on Blackwell cards without a Houdini release built specifically for that architecture, which is the opposite of the situation with several other GPU renderers.

That does not mean the card drops in and works. The two real barriers are the driver branch and a shader compilation error, and both of them produce symptoms that look nothing like a compatibility problem. Karma XPU documentation states that XPU currently supports only CPU and NVIDIA GPU hardware, split into the OptiX GPU engine and the Embree CPU engine. AMD and Intel cards are not an option for the GPU half.

Why does Karma XPU fail with a Failed to create Optix pipeline error?

This is a failure at the shader compilation stage, and on RTX 5090 setups the workaround circulating on the official SideFX forum is to force XPU to use the OptiX IR compilation path through an environment variable.

The symptom is specific enough to recognise. Rendering stops, and the console reports that the OptiX device carrying the RTX 5090 has registered a critical error about failing to create the OptiX pipeline due to a shader compilation fault, followed by a note that the device will stop functioning and further errors will be suppressed.

The fix reported in that forum thread is a single line added to houdini.env: KARMA_XPU_OPTIX_FORCE_OPTIXIR = 1

For anyone who has not edited that file before, it lives in your Houdini user preferences folder, not in the install directory.

Which NVIDIA driver should I use for Karma XPU on an RTX 5090?

Use the branch named in the system requirements page for the Houdini build you are running. SideFX publishes a minimum, a recommended branch, and branches to avoid, and the list differs by operating system.

Driver version carries more weight for XPU than it does for ordinary viewport work, because the GPU half of XPU runs on OptiX, and OptiX ships inside the NVIDIA driver rather than alongside Houdini. When the branch is wrong, you do not get a polite compatibility warning. You get a device that refuses to initialise, or one that compiles shaders incorrectly.

Houdini 22 system requirements state the following for NVIDIA RTX and GeForce cards. On Windows, driver 580.0 Production or Studio is the baseline with 595 recommended, and 590 should be avoided. On Linux, 580.0 Production or Studio is recommended, and both 590 and 595 should be avoided.

How much VRAM does Karma XPU need, and does a second card add memory?

The Houdini 22 system requirements ask for 12GB of VRAM or more on the graphics card. That is a floor for running the software, not a comfort level for a heavy scene, and the 32GB carried by the RTX 5090 is the best option.

Adding a second card does not raise that ceiling. The Karma XPU documentation states that each GPU device is addressed separately and memory is not pooled, so two 32GB cards are two separate 32GB pools rather than one 64GB pool. This is the point people get wrong when they buy a second card to solve a memory problem. If your scene overflows one card, a second card renders the same overflow twice. If your scene fits but renders slowly, a second card genuinely helps, because XPU will use every compatible device it detects.

What happens when a GPU runs out of memory mid render?

The frame still completes. The Karma XPU documentation states that if a device fails, as may happen with a GPU running out of memory, the other devices including the CPU pick up the load and finish the frame, and that no matter what mixture of devices it uses, XPU should produce the exact same result.

Your image comes out correct, so nothing prompts you to investigate, and the only evidence is a render time that is worse than it should be. On a workstation that costs you an evening. On a farm node billed by the hour, you are paying GPU prices for a CPU only render.

Which render farms support Karma XPU?

Karma XPU support is narrower than support for the mainstream GPU renderers, so the first question is not price. It is whether the farm runs Houdini with the XPU engine at all, and at which version.

Karma XPU is comparatively new and tied to Houdini alone, so the number of services that support it well is smaller than the number that support Blender or Redshift. On a job submission service you cannot set either, because the machine image belongs to the operator. On a whole machine rental you install the Houdini build, the driver and the houdini.env entries yourself. For a studio rendering a masterplan sequence where every frame has to match, that control is the whole argument.

Fox Renderfarm: A SaaS service where scenes are submitted through an automated manager. Check the supported software list for Houdini and confirm whether the XPU engine specifically is covered, since Houdini support and Karma XPU support are not the same statement.

GarageFarm: A SaaS service known for responsive human support when a job fails on configuration rather than on the scene, which is useful given how XPU failures present.

iRender: An IaaS service where you rent the whole node by the hour and build the environment yourself, which means installing your exact Houdini build, choosing the driver branch, and adding your own houdini.env entries including the OptiX IR workaround if your setup needs it. RTX 4090 24GB servers start from around $8.20 per hour, and the single card RTX 5090 32GB node is listed at $10.8 per node hour, falling to $9.72 from three hours. The drawbacks: billing runs until you shut the node down manually, the first setup session costs time before it renders anything, and you rent CPU and GPU together with no way to choose your own balance between them.

RANCH Computing: A SaaS service with automated pre flight checks on scene integrity and asset paths.

RebusFarm: A SaaS service structured around a submitter plugin installed into the host application. Check the supported software list for Houdini and for the XPU engine, and check the GPU listings on their portal.

SuperRenderFarm: A SaaS service to evaluate on the same points: whether Houdini with Karma XPU is supported, at which versions, and what hardware sits behind it.

None of this makes SaaS the weaker choice. If a farm has already validated Karma XPU on its fleet, it has done it on hardware you never have to configure, with no machine to forget about at the end of the night. That is a real saving, and for a straightforward sequence it is the lower risk path.

IaaS earns its place when the environment is the problem, which for Karma XPU it frequently is. Renting the machine gives you the driver branch you want, the Houdini patch build you tested against, and the environment variables your setup needs.

What should I check before sending a Karma XPU job to a farm?

Match the Houdini build between your machine and the farm, down to the patch version where you can. Confirm the driver branch on the render nodes against the system requirements for that build. If you are relying on the OptiX IR workaround locally, make sure the same environment variable exists on the farm side, because without it the job fails there in exactly the way you just finished fixing at home. Then render one test frame, read the log, and confirm which devices actually participated before you send the whole sequence.

FAQ

Does Karma XPU support the RTX 5090?

Yes, and it does not require a Houdini build made specifically for the Blackwell architecture, unlike several other GPU renderers that had to ship new versions before the card was usable at all.

How do I fix Failed to create Optix pipeline in Karma XPU?

The workaround shared on the official SideFX forum is to add KARMA_XPU_OPTIX_FORCE_OPTIXIR = 1 to your houdini.env file and restart Houdini. That file sits in your Houdini user preferences folder, named for your version, not in the installation directory.

How much VRAM does Karma XPU need?

The Houdini 22 system requirements ask for 12GB of VRAM or more on the graphics card, and the Karma XPU documentation separately asks for a GPU with Compute Capability 5.0 or higher.

Do two GPUs give Karma XPU more memory?

No. The Karma XPU documentation states that each GPU device is addressed separately and memory is not pooled, so two 32GB cards remain two separate 32GB pools rather than a shared 64GB pool.

What happens if the GPU fails during a Karma XPU render?

The frame still completes. The documentation states that when a device fails, for example a GPU running out of memory, the other devices including the CPU pick up the load and finish the frame, and XPU produces the same result regardless of which mixture of devices was used. The downside is that you may not notice the GPU dropped out, and will only see an unusually slow render.

If Cycles does not list your RTX 5090, the Blender version is the reason.
Why doesn’t Cycles detect my RTX 5090 in an architectural project?

Because of the Blender version. Cycles supports the GeForce RTX 50 series from Blender 4.4 onward, so 4.3 or anything older will not list the card at all. Blender 4.4 was released on 18 March 2025 and its official release notes list Blackwell support under GPU rendering.

Cycles ships precompiled CUDA binaries for every GPU architecture it supports, and Blackwell cards such as the RTX 5090 use the sm_120 architecture. That binary entered the default Cycles set in the 4.4 release, which was compiled with CUDA toolkit 12.8 or later. A 4.3 build never contained it, so there is nothing for the renderer to load. Check your own machine in Preferences, then System, and see whether the card appears in the Cycles device list. If it does not, the version is almost always the cause rather than the driver.

CUDA or OptiX for architectural scenes on the RTX 5090?

Start with OptiX. OptiX is NVIDIA’s ray tracing API and can use the dedicated RT hardware on RTX cards, while CUDA runs on the general purpose CUDA cores. For a path traced interior with a lot of indirect light bouncing off white walls and glossy floors, which describes most architectural work, OptiX is the sensible default to reach for first.

Then verify it on your own scene. Results shift with the scene, the Blender version and your render settings, so a backend chosen from a spec sheet is a guess. Render one representative frame on OptiX, render the same frame on CUDA, and keep every other setting identical while you do it, because a comparison with a changed sample count or a different denoiser tells you nothing. On an RTX 5090, start with OptiX for path traced interiors, then test CUDA on the same frame if the result looks off.

What does 32GB of VRAM change for a Blender architectural scene?

It raises the ceiling on the two things that break arch-viz scenes in Blender: texture heavy interiors and dense landscaping. A 4K set for floors, brick and fabric, downloaded furniture assets that nobody has optimised, thousands of scattered trees and grass clumps for the site plan, plus repeated apartment units across a tower, all land in the same memory pool. Going from 24GB to 32GB is roughly 33% more headroom, which often means keeping full resolution textures instead of downsizing them the night before a client presentation.

Should an architect render Blender Cycles scenes locally or on a farm?

Local rendering is enough for single stills and for the whole modelling stage. A farm starts to pay off when the work turns into volume: a set of twenty angles for a sales brochure, a building walkthrough, or a client deadline that lands two days early. One still overnight is a workstation job. Twenty stills overnight is not.

Power and heat belong in this calculation too, since the RTX 5090 carries a 575W TDP against 450W on the RTX 4090, and a week of long renders in a small studio turns into a real electricity bill and a real temperature problem. For architecture students the cheapest path usually stays local: Blender is free.

Which render farms handle Blender architectural projects?

Because Blender is free and widely used, all six farms below serve Blender users to some degree. That is a real advantage over Lumion or D5 Render, where SaaS farms cannot run the software at all and your options collapse to renting a whole machine.

The choice splits into two service models. A SaaS farm takes your .blend file, distributes the frames across its own machines, renders them and sends the images back. You never touch the operating system, and you never pick the Blender version, the farm does. An IaaS service rents you the whole machine by the hour. You install Blender yourself, at the exact version your project needs, with your own addons, and you switch the machine off when you are done. For arch-viz work that distinction matters more than it does for a generalist, because architectural pipelines lean on addons and on external asset libraries far more than a simple character render does.

Fox Renderfarm: Runs a SaaS pipeline where scenes are submitted through an automated manager and frames are distributed across the fleet. Confirm the supported Blender versions and how your arch-viz addons are handled before you submit, since an unsupported addon is the usual reason an interior scene fails.

GarageFarm: A SaaS provider that is well established in the Blender community, with automated scene parsing and human support when asset paths or linked libraries break. That support matters for arch-viz specifically, because furniture libraries and external texture sets are exactly what go missing on upload.

iRender: Uses an IaaS model where you rent a full remote desktop node by the hour. You install your own Blender build, your own arch-viz addons and your own asset libraries directly on the machine, which removes the version and addon guesswork entirely. RTX 4090 24GB servers start from around $8.20 per hour, and the single card RTX 5090 32GB node is listed at $10.8 per node hour, falling to $9.72 from three hours. The operational drawback of IaaS is billing accountability: the node keeps charging until you shut it down manually, and you rent CPU and GPU together with no way to pick your own balance between them.

RANCH Computing: A SaaS farm with automated pre-flight checks on asset paths and scene integrity. It publishes supported card tiers, include RTX 5090 nodes, so it is one of the few SaaS options where the hardware question has a published answer. Verify that your Blender version and addon set match their current server-side deployment.

RebusFarm: A SaaS farm structured around an integrated submitter plugin installed into the host application, with jobs queuing automatically across available nodes. That workflow suits a batch of twenty exterior angles better than it suits a one-off hero still. Check their portal for current GPU listings and for the Blender versions the submitter supports.

SuperRenderFarm: A SaaS farm to evaluate on the same three points as the others: supported Blender versions, addon handling, and per-frame pricing.

SaaS has genuine strengths for this workload. Frame distribution is automatic, which is exactly what a twenty angle batch or a walkthrough wants, and it is the one thing a single rented machine cannot do for you. There is no machine to forget about, so the bill cannot run overnight because you closed the laptop lid. Submission is simple enough that a student can use it on the first try. For a sequence of finished frames with no exotic dependencies.

IaaS earns its place when the scene has dependencies. If your arch-viz workflow relies on a specific Blender version, a particular addon for greeble, scattering or CAD import, or a linked library structure that assumes certain paths, being able to install and configure everything yourself removes an entire class of failure. It also lets you sit in the viewport on the rented machine, which matters during the lighting stage rather than the final render stage.

iRenderrents whole RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 machines by the hour, where you install your own Blender build and your own arch-viz addons. They are having a 100% bonus on a first deposit made within 24 hours of registration, and an education discount for students and teachers.

What should I check before sending a Blender arch-viz job to a farm?

The Blender version, the addons, the external asset paths, and the billing model. Match your local Blender version to what the farm supports, because a scene saved in a newer build can behave differently on an older one. Check every arch-viz addon against the farm’s supported list, since unsupported addons are the most common reason Blender jobs fail on a farm. Use Blender’s pack resources function so textures and linked files travel with the scene instead of pointing at a drive the farm cannot see.

FAQ

Which Blender Cycles version supports the RTX 5090?

Blender 4.4, released on 18 March 2025, is the first version that supports the GeForce RTX 50 series in Cycles, and the official 4.4 release notes list Blackwell support under GPU rendering. Builds from 4.3 and earlier contain no CUDA binary for the card’s sm_120 architecture, so Cycles does not list the device at all.

Why doesn’t Blender see my new graphics card?

Almost always because the Blender version predates the card. For the RTX 5090 you need Blender 4.4 or newer. Open Preferences, then System, and check whether the card appears in the Cycles device list. If it does not, upgrade Blender first, then update the NVIDIA driver.

Should I use CUDA or OptiX in Cycles on an RTX 5090?

Start with OptiX. OptiX is NVIDIA’s ray tracing API and can use the dedicated ray tracing hardware on RTX cards, while CUDA runs on the ordinary CUDA cores. For path traced architectural interiors, OptiX is the reasonable starting point.

Is 32GB of VRAM necessary for Blender architectural rendering?

Not necessary, but useful when your scene is pressing against 24GB, which usually means texture heavy interiors with 4K materials.

Which render farm is best for Blender architectural projects?

Because Blender is free and widely used, the six farms commonly mentioned, Fox Renderfarm, GarageFarm, iRender, RANCH Computing, RebusFarm and SuperRenderFarm, all serve Blender users. Rather than asking which farm is best, ask three questions: which Blender versions it supports, how it handles your arch-viz addons, and whether it bills per frame or per machine hour.

“Let’s be honest: being a 3D artist in 2026 is exciting, but also a bit crazy. Remember when we used to wait hours for a single render or spend all weekend fixing messy 3D models? Those days are over. Today, AI has changed everything. The time it takes to go from a simple idea to a finished project has dropped from days to just minutes. If you are still doing everything manually, you are wasting both your time and your health. From smart rendering to easy animation tools, here are the top AI tools every 3d artist should try in 2026 to work faster and smarter.”

I. The Reality of 3D in 2026: Human Creativity Meets AI Power

In 2026, the 3D world is no longer about who has the fastest computer, but who has the smartest workflow. The reality is simple: AI is not replacing 3D artists; it is becoming our most powerful co-pilot. Today, the relationship between an artist and AI is a “partnership.” While we provide the vision, storytelling, and emotional touch, AI handles the “grunt work”—the boring, repetitive tasks like fixing textures, cleaning up meshes, or waiting for noise to disappear in a render.

In this new era, 3D artists are shifting from being “manual laborers” to “creative directors.” Instead of spending 10 hours building a chair from scratch, we use AI to generate the base in 10 seconds, leaving us more time to focus on what actually matters: Art.

II. Top AI Tools Every 3D Artist Should Try in 2026

1. Rodin AI (by Hyper 3D)

Rodin AI is arguably the most powerful “Generative AI” for 3D professionals in 2026. While other tools focus on speed, Rodin focuses on precision. It is a high-end AI engine that converts 2D images or text descriptions into high-fidelity 3D assets. Within a minute, it generates a model that includes not just the shape, but also high-resolution materials.

Why use it: The biggest headache for 3D artists is “messy topology” (random triangles and holes in the model). Rodin solves this by producing clean, quad-dominant geometry. This means you don’t have to spend hours “fixing” the model before you can use it. It also generates 4K PBR textures, including maps for metallic and normals, making it look incredibly realistic.

Best for: If you are using 3ds Max or Blender, Rodin is a lifesaver. For example, if you need a specific, high-end designer sofa for a living room render? Instead of searching hours for a paid model, just upload a photo from a catalog, and Rodin builds it for you. For artists working in Unreal Engine 5 or Unity, Rodin provides “Production-Ready” assets. You can export the model directly as an FBX or OBJ file and it’s ready for lighting.

2. Meshy.ai – The All-in-One Speed Tool

In 2026, Meshy.ai has become the go-to tool for artists who need to move fast. If Rodin AI is a “fine artist,” then Meshy is a “high-speed factory.” It is designed to take the boring, technical work off your plate so you can focus on the fun parts of 3D. Meshy is an AI platform that creates 3D models, textures, and skeletons (rigging) in under 60 seconds.

source: Meshy AI

Why use it: The best part of Meshy is Auto-Rigging. Normally, making a 3D character move is very difficult and takes a long time. Meshy adds the “bones” to your character automatically. This means your character is ready to walk or jump almost immediately.

Best for: you can use Meshy to make the basic shape, then use Blender to make it look even better. If you use Unity or Unreal Engine, you can use Meshy to make hundreds of small items for your game world, like trees, boxes, or background characters. It saves you from doing boring, repetitive work. Besides, you can use Meshy to make the basic shape, then use Blender to make it look even better.

3. Tripo AI

Tripo AI is an AI-powered 3D creation platform designed to generate 3D models quickly from simple inputs like text prompts, images, or sketches. Instead of manually modeling objects in traditional 3D software, users can describe an object or upload a picture and the AI automatically creates a production-ready 3D asset within seconds or minutes.

Why use it: AI tools like Tripo AI aim to cut this time dramatically, generating models in under a minute and allowing artists to focus more on creativity rather than repetitive modeling work.

Best for: Tripo AI is best for creators who need fast AI-generated 3D assets without spending hours modeling manually. It’s especially useful for people working in games, animation, product design, and prototyping. For example, Game Developers, 3D Artists & Concept Designers.

4. NVIDIA Omniverse – AI Collaboration Platform

NVIDIA Omniverse has evolved from a simple collaboration tool into the “operating system” for 3D AI. It isn’t just one app; it’s a platform that allows different 3D software (like Blender, Maya, and Unreal Engine) to “talk” to each other in real-time while injecting powerful AI into the workflow.

source: NVIDIA Newsroom

Why use it: In a normal workflow, moving a project between different apps like Blender, Maya, or Unreal Engine is a nightmare—you’re constantly exporting files, fixing broken textures, and waiting for renders. Omniverse solves this by letting all your favorite tools talk to each other in real-time. If you change a light in one app, it updates instantly in the other.

Best for: If you use Blender for modeling, Substance for texturing, and Unreal Engine for rendering, you are the prime candidate. For those who need to show clients exactly what a building or product will look like in the real world. Omniverse uses Physically Based Rendering (PBR) and real-world physics.

5. Deep Motion

DeepMotion is an AI platform for creating 3D animations from video or text. Its main tool, Animate 3D, uses markerless motion capture, meaning it tracks human motion directly from video without sensors or suits.

Why use it: You should use DeepMotion Animate 3D because it makes creating 3D character animations much faster, cheaper, and easier than traditional animation methods. DeepMotion also uses AI to capture human movement directly from a normal video, so you don’t need expensive mocap suits, sensors, or special cameras.

Best for: DeepMotion is best for game developers, 3D artists, animators, and content creators who want to create character animations quickly without using expensive motion-capture equipment. By turning simple videos into realistic 3D animations, it helps speed up workflows for indie game studios, filmmakers, and VR developers. It’s also a great tool for beginners who want an easy way to animate characters without advanced animation skills.

III. Skills for 2026: From “Builder” to “Director”

In 2026, 3D art is no longer about doing all the hard work by hand. AI has become like a very smart assistant. The tools we use are no longer just software; they are smart partners. To stay ahead, your mindset needs to shift from being the person who “does the work” to being the person who “leads the vision.”

Here are the essential skills you should develop to work effectively with AI tools:

Advanced Prompting (Technical Directing): You need to learn how to give very clear instructions. Instead of saying “make a car,” you must learn to say things like “make a red sports car with shiny metal and bright sunlight.” Learning the right words for materials, lights, and camera angles so the AI doesn’t have to guess.

Cleaning Up” the Mess (Fixing Models): AI is fast, but it is not perfect. Sometimes the 3D models it makes have messy lines or weird shapes. You need to be able to take a messy AI sculpt and turn it into a “clean” model that works in a game engine.

Hybrid Workflow Integration: Don’t let the AI do everything. The best artists use AI for the “boring” parts and do the “creative” parts themselves. Knowing when to use AI (to save time) and when to draw or model by hand (to make it look unique).

Knowing “What Looks Real” (The Eye): Because AI can make anything in seconds, there will be millions of AI images and models everywhere. You need a “Good Eye.” You must be able to see if the weight of a character looks right or if the shadows are in the correct place. You are the Quality Control manager.

IV. Conclusion

AI is rapidly transforming the way 3D artists work, making it possible to create models, textures, animations, and environments faster than ever before. AI tools are helping artists streamline their workflows and focus more on creativity rather than repetitive tasks.

The most successful artists in 2026 are not those who are afraid of AI, but those who use it like a powerful new brush. AI gives you speed, but you provide the soul. While a machine can generate a perfect 3D model in seconds, only a human artist can decide if that model tells the right story or fits the right mood.

What is 3D GPU rendering?

GPUs are increasingly being applied in different industries and fields, from computer graphics to AI, machine learning, big data applications, and even games. The GPU can handle parallel tasks, delivering realistic rendering results.

Advantages of using GPU

Speed

The GPU can handle multiple tasks in parallel, taking full advantage of multi-core performance. The GPU has fast real-time rendering. When the same scene is complex, GPU rendering outperforms CPU rendering.

Optimization

The advent of GPUs has allowed designers to accelerate their performance. However, creativity is not limited; GPUs continue to be professionally developed for each specific field. It is optimized for gaming, rendering, design, etc. GPUs optimized for rendering can deliver consistent results faster, which saves them time and also works well with rendering scenes.

Affordability

Compared to a high-end CPU like the AMD Threadripper 3990x, the RXT 3090 GPU is less expensive and easier to replace and combine multiple GPUs (multi-card GPU). Therefore, you can ultimately own multiple GPUs to serve your work, speeding up your work performance within the allowable budget.

3D GPU rendering System

In the VFX sector, Octane is the most widely used renderer and the fastest spectrally accurate GPU-accelerated renderer. We will go over an overview of Octane and the Octane Cloud render farm in this article with Radarrender.

Octane render: what is it?

In 2012, the New Zealand-based OTOY firm launched Octane. Everyone in the VFX business is quite familiar with octane because it is frequently used in advertisements, movies, and rendering for buildings. Filmmaking, interior design, the 3D creative sector, and Octane, a well-known render engine used for C4D, are just a few of the businesses that use Octane render engine.

What makes working with Octane appealing to renderers?

The lighting and texturing are excellent features, and the other materials, shaders, camera, and motion blur are thoughtfully rewarded in Octane’s stunning output. Because Octane is quick, controllable, and enjoyable to use, you can get results that are more photorealistic than with any other engine. Octane offers its users simple render options so they can spend more time on the actual creative process and less time troubleshooting settings. Octane is simple to learn, yet it offers a wide range of complicated capabilities that support OSL script, volumetric shading, and much more to allow it to be used in a wide range of applications.

Octane is a quick, intelligent activity that is among the best for GPU cloud rendering. On the other hand, you can use LiveViewer to speed up your work with Octane. Users can observe a rendered scene in real-time thanks to this feature. especially when rendering is handled by the GPU in octane. When an object is modified, lighting is added, or the texture composition changes, IPR updates instantly. Octane reduces the cost of hardware upgrades.

What renderers don’t like about working with Octane?

Although the plugin interaction with Cinema 4D, their preferred 3d software, has been done nicely, Octane occasionally crashes, and there is room for development. More tools for integrating Cinema 4d’s tools into the Octane workflow are something would like to see.

“Despite the fact that Octane’s parameters are kept to a minimum, I occasionally wish I had the ability to deviate from the unbiased method, for instance by splitting the numbers for reflection and refraction. I’ve never felt that finding the most recent versions on the forums and then having to search them for patches was the best way to keep my software up to date”, a 3D artist shared.

What issues is the product addressing, and how does that help you?

Simply put, Octane has made it possible for me to significantly raise the caliber of my work. Octane’s elegance and speed have completely changed the way people work with textures, lighting, and sophisticated elements that require lengthy render times, such as displacement or subsurface scattering. A creative is liberated from lengthy render durations spent patiently trying to construct a render by being able to see and alter their renders fast in a live render viewer, which cannot be overstated. Due to Octane’s rapid render times and user-friendly workflow, you may work considerably more productively in the time you save.

Octane cannot use a normal render farm. Currently, one of the biggest drawbacks of using Octane is that you struggle with extremely large projects or deadlines. You need a render farm to make progress and meet deadlines. Octane offers ORC (Octane Render Cloud), its own version of a render farm. However, it was super expensive. There are other render farms you can use. However, this violates the EULA (End User License Agreement), and getting caught can mean losing your license. It would suck.

Top 3 Octane cloud render farm

We had a list summary top 3 Best Render Farms for Octane Renderer in the article, you can read and choose a render farm that helps you speed up when working with Octane Renderer.

Conclusion

Octane is the faster render engine in 3D rendering. Octane supports high-resolution textures, mesh emitters, IES files, and a sun/sky system. You can rotate or position an HDRI file in your scene, or turn any object into a mesh light by enabling the emission property of the material. Octane allows you to manipulate the lighting in the scene according to your choice.

3D modeling is a vast technology that has been used in many areas, to name a few, games, films, architecture, illustrations, engineering, and advertising. The process and tools used for modeling will be different for each application. Besides some popular 3D software like Cinema 4D, Maya, 3ds Max, and Blender which almost everyone can use, there are quite a few software suitable for specific tasks. Mention to human creation, Daz Studio is definitely the best and the most popular software. With tons of tools and assets, Daz Studio create and render 3D scene to produce images as well as animations. Visualization is done using mainly the advanced Iray rendering which come free with Daz Studio itself.

Iray is a physically based render engine that simulates how light works in the real world. In other words, it can create very photorealistic renders. One of Iray’s highlight is its ultilization of RT Cores to accelerate ray tracing performance in real time. Moreover, as Iray is based on NVIDIA’s latest technology, we must have an NVIDIA graphics card to take advantage of the fast GPU rendering speeds. However, not all NVIDIA cards can do real-time ray tracing. Only RTX cards, which includes dedicated ray-tracing-acceleration RT cores, supports real-time ray tracing.

They provide high-performance machines for GPU-based and CPU-based rendering on the Cloud, their products are very impressive. First coming to their website, the interface and instructions are very friendly and easy to understand. I think a beginner can fully understand what they offer within 1 hour. They have website instructions, video tutorials and documents to help you get started. Almost all information can be found up there. Even if you have questions or need some guidance, their support is awesome.
Back to the products, they provide both powerful CPU and GPU servers. Their main products are GPU servers with RTX 3090 – one of the most powerful graphics card at the moment, especially RTX 3090 is the latest card of NVIDIA RTX series, which is perfect for real-time raytracing with Daz Studio and Iray. Currently, they offer 5 GPU packages: 1/2/4/6/8x RTX 3090. I think these various options will let their customers have a wide choice for their projects and budgets. Anyone, from a freelanceer, hobbist to studio can use their service, this is definitely a big plus. Moreover, the configuration and price are listed clearly, we will know other important information affecting the performance like processors, RAM, storage and operating system.

What if we want to customize the configuration? Do they allow that? Yes, we can. However, we have to meet their requirements. Some needs us to be Prime Customers, some requires us to use for a long-term period (at least some days), I think it is fair enough. And some we can get it free (I like free things!). This flexibility make me wonder how can they do it. The answer lies in their Cloud Service Model. Unlike traditional render farm, iRender offer servers in the IaaS model. Simply explained, they offer you the infrastructure (remote workstation), you will connect to it, customize the workstation to your own pipeline. This kind of workflow is a huge advantage for artists who have the need to fully control the whole process, to edit the project while rendering, or use special software like Daz Studio & Iray, Lumion, Enscape or special pipeline like Blender Python Scripting.

However, iRender has one thing that might be inconvenient to Daz Studio users. We have to upload the library, or at least all assests needed for the project to their server. I think it is fine if the library is up to 100 GB, but hundreds of GB or some TB of library will be a trouble. Some Daz Studio users might hesitate to upload that huge amount of data. Luckily, iRender develops and provides a free transferring tool – Gpuhub Sync (up to 1TB or even more), which can be accessed even when the server is turned off. Also, the application and data will be saved and ready for next use. So basically we only need to set up the working environment in 1st time connecting to the server, in the next session, we can just go in and start rendering right away, certainly saving us tons of time and money.

Another thing that I really like about iRender is their various promotions and discounts. Currently, they offer free trial, bonus for new users, volume discounts, discounts for long-term rental, educational promotion, referral program, and discount of specific server. We really can make use of them for more time rendering.

Xesktop offers 2 types of GPU servers: 10x GTX 1080Ti and 8x Tesla V100. Although we can install and render on any of the popular 3D software, I think their servers are more suitable for multi-GPU-support software in terms of performance and price. But, for Daz Studio & Iray which support multi-GPU rendering, they are both a preferred choice. 10x GTX 1080Ti is better for usual 3D work and software that can utilize all 10 GPU cards, while 8x Tesla V100 is more suitable for AI training, heavy 3D projects and software that support 8 or less GPU cards. Though each server is better for specific needs, and 8x Tesla V100 server is faster than 10x GTX 1080Ti, they are interchangeable, and will both do a good job. Especially when we can create multiple instances to reduce time. The price is not too much different too.

I have to give a big shoutout to Xesktop’s support. Their website and interface is super friendly and easy to use, especially for new users. They introduce and guide step by step when we logging in the account for the first time. Important information, server specifications and useful instruction links are clearly listed and pinned right above the Web Manager. That is why I can immediately understand the workflow and what needs to be taken. Their customer support is amazing too, available 24/7 by email, skype and live chat. They will reponse almost right away to any inquiries.

Bacially, the service model of Xesktop is the same as iRender. However, Xesktop still have some differences. The first difference is that we still have some limitations with the server, like we can not customize the hardware according to our needs as the specs of server is fixed. I think this is a somehow a disadvantage. The second difference is that we must save any project data and output data on U: which is a network drive and dedicated storage, while iRender recommend to do so in C drive or desktop. After experiencing both farms, we found that iRender’s data retrieval speed is faster. The reason for this second difference must lie in each farm’s technology. We should experience both service to find out which solution is better for our needs.

Xesktop has another disadvantage (same as iRender): we have to upload the library, all assets needed for projetcs to the server. Moreover, its transferring method is kinda limited. Unlike iRender developing their own tool, Xesktop uses third party FTP services, cloud drives (i.e. Dropbox or Google Drive). For FTP connection, we have to launch the instance for the first time to create the storage, only after that can the storage work properly. For Dropbox, we must request Xesktop support to set up the sync folder as Dropbox can’t use a network drive for the sync folder location.

As we can see from the results, server 6x RTX 3090 and 8x RTX 3090 of iRender have the shortest time to render. They both are faster than Xesktop’s fastest server – 8x Tesla V100. 3 remaining servers of iRender (1x RTX 3090, 2x RTX 3090 and 4x RTX 3090), on the other hand, are slower than both Xesktop servers. Overall, iRender ranks 1 in terms of rendering speed. However, the price of Xesktop is more reasonable: $6/hour for 10x GTX 1080Ti, $8/hour for 8x Tesla V100, compared to the lowest $3.8/hour to the highest $28/hour of iRender servers. Artists choose which render farm according to their needs, for who only care about the speed, iRender is perfect while Xesktop is more preferred for who want to optimize the cost.

Note: The test result is only for the reference because it is a quite simple test scene. The rendering time will vary in projects with different assests, settings, etc. Therefore, the best way to evaluate which farm is the right one for you is experience both iRender and Xesktop, test some frames/scenes and decide by yourself.

Anima Render provide 2 types of server: 5x GTX 1080Ti and 5x RTX 2080Ti, but the price is quite expensive compared to other farms. Another minus point is that the application and data are not stored as the servers reboot from time to time, so we have to re-install everything every time we go in. This is very inconvenient because Daz Studio library, assets are usually heavy, and seems to be impossible if library, assets are up to 1TB or even more.

However, test results are for reference only, I strongly recommend you to experience by yourself and choose the farm that suits your project and needs most. Currently, there are thousands of render farms out there, if you know a good solution that has not been mentioned in this article, do not hesitate to share it with us by email “admin@radarrender.com”.
Nowaday, GPU rendering enables the use of graphics cards for rendering in place of CPU, which remarkably speeds up the rendering process. The principle of GPU rendering is running across multiple cores on multiple data, focusing parallel processing on one specific task while freeing up the CPU to emphasize different sequential serial processing jobs. To shorten the rendering time of GPU, there are a wide variety of render engines utilizing GPU rendering. Especially, leveraging multiple GPUs simultaneously to render can be 5 or 10 times faster than that of a single GPU. One of the outstanding names that has been widely used by 3D artists worldwide is Octane Render of OTOY Inc.

Because of Octane’s popularity in the 3D world, there are hundreds of render farms out there that provide Cloud Rendering services to solve the big problem of computer performance for rendering. However, having too many options to choose from makes 3D artists confused and wonder which will be the most suitable Render farm for them? Every render farm can advertise that they support rendering with Octane well with the cheapest price, that they are the best render farm for this renderer, but who knows how many percent is the truth. Therefore, in order to give Radarrender’s friends, all 3D addicts worldwide, the most specific, clear, and fair answer to this above question, we decided to conduct a comprehensive test on many leading render farms currently to find out the Best Render Farms for Octane Render in 2022.

Hoping that spending a quick glance on our effort could help you make the most suitable choice for your needs and save much time, effort, and money for your upcoming rendering. We have conducted the test and given reviews of some other render engines that make use of multi-GPU rendering such as Best Render farms for Redshift renderer 2022, and Best renderfarms for Blender, Eevee vs Cycles here if you might be interested. And if the software that you are using hasn’t been shown up. Don’t worry, there will be a series of reviews about each software afterward. Stay tuned to update the latest articles from us!

Assessment scope and method

To be more specific, 3 out of 5 render farms rated as the most worthwhile render farms to use in 2022 in our previous article including iRender, Ranch Computing and Rebusfarm have surpassed hundreds of other competitors to sit on Top best render farms for Octane render 2022. Unfortunately, the other 2 leading renderfarms, Garagefarm and Fox renderfarm, do not support rendering with Octane Render. Hopefully these 2 render farms will soon add Octane Render to the list of supported software so that users could have more options in the future.

The 3D software and render engine used for the evaluation is Cinema 4d R23 and Octane renderer 2020.2.5. As we all know, OctaneRender® is one of the world’s first and fastest unbiased, spectrally correct GPU render engines, delivering quality and speed unrivaled by any production renderer on the market developed by graphics software company OTOY Inc. This renderer advances state of the art graphics technologies with groundbreaking machine learning optimizations, out-of-core geometry support, massive 10-100x speed gains in the scene graph, and RTX ray tracing GPU hardware acceleration. Octane now has integrated and supported up to 21 types of 3D software with various versions. There are 2 types of Octane licenses including Studio and Enterprise Subscription. Studio Subscriptions allow artists and studios full access to OTOY’s acclaimed OctaneRender VFX software and ecosystem through low monthly or annual subscription offerings on a maximum of 2 GPUs while Enterprise Subscriptions offer network/ offline rendering and enable to use more than 2 GPUs.

When it comes to the evaluating process, we bring the same test project including 12 frames with 3000 x 1500 resolution to those chosen render farms and render the project normally until we get the final render output and then calculate the relation between render time and cost, their strengths and weaknesses also to rank these render farms.

For those who would like to have a quick look through our test result:

iRender – Total Cost: $2.88, Render time: 15.6 min

iRender Farm

iRender is one of the leading render farms specializing in providing high-performance machines for rendering. Rendering is managed on the Web basis. There are some points that make this renderfarm unique. Firstly, unlike others, the whole concept of using here is to allow users to connect, take full and flexible control over their powerful physical server online via Remote Desktop connection, using 100% performance of the selected server, not share it with anyone to speed up render time. Users could flexibly switch between those powerful servers without re-installing the software or re-uploading the files as well.

Moreover, the hardware configuration that this render farm offers is impressive, consisting of cutting edge graphics cards from Nvidia such as RTX 3090 and RTX 3080. This render farm can be considered as the most suitable render farm for Octane Render. The servers range from 1/ 2/ 4/6/8 RTX 3090/3080 and even servers with 8 monster RTX 3090 and the CPU is AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3955WX @ 3.90GHz. If users have Octane Studio subscriptions, the most suitable server is servers with 2 RTX 3090 while servers with 4/6/8 RTX 3080/3090 will be ideal for Octane Enterprise Subscription. Downloading and uploading files to/from the server is also done quickly and easily via their 2-way synced tool named Gpuhubsync. That free transfer file tool is free and unlimited storage. Moreover, iRender supports all versions of Octane render. Having this highly customized feature, iRender is suitable for jobs with large size and complex pipelines and tight deadlines, in which users could take control of the robust servers and customize the scene files directly like they do on their local computer if there’s any change in the assets or materials, etc.

Finally, the render cost in this test is much cheaper than all other render farms that’s not mentioned iRender has many other promotions currently such as Bonus 50% for new customer’s first recharge, Bonus 5% to 15% for recharge from $118 to $1500, or discount 20% to 40% for daily/weekly rental. If users could take advantage of these promotions, the cost of rendering will be surprisingly cheap!

However, the workflow of rendering in iRender is more complicated compared to others for the first time. As mentioned above, users need to manually install software on a new machine (as shown in our testing video). Fortunately, software installation is one time only then all installed data is automatically stored and saved for later usage. Moreover, users need to use their own software license to render in iRender, which is somewhat inconvenient if you still want to use your Octane license on your local computer. Finally, although having no queue time, there is still a chance that users will have to wait if the servers that they are going to use are fully used by others. Rarely happens doesn’t mean it won’t happen! Any users using iRender should be careful with this feature to have the best plan for your rendering.

iRender test results

+ The total number of frames: 12

+ The queue time: No queue time

+ The installing software time: 45.3 minutes (one time only)

+ The render time: 15.6 minutes (excluded the installing software time)

+ Cost: 2.8 $

→ Rendering 1000 frames would take around 21.6 hours and $240.

Based on the testing result, this render farm ranks number one out of all the rest and becoming the cheapest render farm in terms of Price. The rendering cost is 6-time-cheaper than Rebusfarm and 5-time-cheaper compared to Ranch Computing. That is not to mention other promotions such as 50% bonus for the first deposit, 20-40% discount if renting by day/week etc. When it comes to Render time, the renderfarm is in 3rd place. That’s quite reasonable because in this test, we use only 1 node. iRender allows users to use multiple nodes simultaneously (10++ nodes). Users are able to choose to use 2 or 3 or more nodes so that the render time could be down to 2 or 3 times or more accordingly. Another highlight when experiencing this render farm is “no queue time” at all! Waiting is not happiness in the case of rendering!

Ranch Computing

Regarding RANCH Computing, it is also a big name providing a high-performance rendering service for both CPU and GPU-based rendering. Customers could easily access the RANCH Computing farm and utilize the power of a dozen render nodes to speed up the rendering process. They offer their GPU farm service with 2 types of graphic cards including mainly RTX 2080 Ti and one of the best graphic cards in 2021, RTX 3090 as well. Users could leverage the huge number of render nodes to speed up the render time. They offer a maximum of 14 nodes for GPU-Low (0.009 per OB hour), 28 nodes for GPU-Medium (0.012 per OB hour), and 56 nodes for GPU-High (0.016 per OB hour). The rendering performance in the test is extremely impressive to us. Leveraging the huge number of nodes, our 12 test frames were rendered as fast as a wind. The render time is 5-times faster than that of iRender and 3-time faster than Rebusfarm.

Rendering is on the web basis which is quite clear and friendly for users to manage the rendering process. The first step is to download the free and easily-to-use online tool RANCHecker and integrate it into 3D software to prepare and check the scene carefully for smooth rendering after that. This plugin will gather all assets used by your scene, verify the rendering parameters, change file paths if necessary, and warn you in case of possible issues. The rest of the workflow is quite normal including Uploading files, Waiting for the queue list, Rendering and Downloading the results. Fortunately users could submit the project directly from the local computer onto the RANCH. Downloading frames from a secure and fast FTP account is also a strength of this renderfarm.

Nevertheless, same like other renderfarm, users have to queue before being served, which may be vague when waiting for your turn and do not know exactly how long it will take even though Ranch illustrates clearly the queue part. Moreover we noticed that Ranch only supports a limited version of Octane render. To be more specific, for Cinema 4D software from R16 to R24, this render farm only supports one version of Octane is Octane 2020.2.5. Lastly, Ranch has few promotions or discounts. Currently they only give customers volume bonus 10% for all recharges.

Moreover, users are currently able to send a job with under 50GB of data. Rendering very heavy projects put a lot of strain on the RANCH systems, it is therefore mandatory to contact RANCH before submitting any project bigger than 50 GB (uncompressed size of archive generated by the RANCHecker) to check whether RANCH is possible to render your project or not. And finally, the rendering cost at this render farm is relatively expensive compared to others such as iRender. Users should carefully consider whether it is worth investing a large amount of money in exchange for high- speed?

Ranch Computing’s test results:

+ The number of frames: 12 frames

+ The queue time: 1.78 minutes (highest priority)

+ The render time: 2.98 minutes (excluded the queue time)

+ Cost: $13.67

→ Rendering 1000 frames would take around 4.13 hours and $1,139.

The capability to leverage the huge number of nodes help Ranch Computing has the fastest render time. As mentioned above, the render time is approximately 5-time faster than that of iRender and 3-times faster than Rebusfarm. However, the Rendering Expense is such a pain when this render farm holds the 2nd place in terms of the most expensive renderfarms (just less expensive than Rebusfarm). Therefore, if you are having a really tight deadline and high budget is not a problem then you could consider going with this renderfarm. Otherwise, iRender is still a better choice in both Price and Render speed.

Rebus Farm

Final representative in top render farms for Octane render is Rebusfarm. With the experience of more than ten years in the field of 3D rendering, Rebus has been improving a lot to be one of the most trusted render cloud services. Its CPU is Intel i9-7980XE, 2.60 GHz, 18 cores while GPU rendering is the strong points of this renderfarm. Their GPU is the powerful Quadro RTX 6000 which has 48GB of DRAM onboard. This will perform better in memory-hungry professional workloads.

Rendering process on Rebusfarm will be managed on a web basis and using their powerful C4D Render Farm is just one click away. After installation Cinema 4D Render Farm Software 3.0, users will find it inside the Cinema 4D menu. The Farminizer scans all project assets to deliver renderings in the easiest and fastest way. To be more specific, what users need to do first is prepare a project on the local computer, then uploading and downloading files can be automatically or manually managed by the convenient RebusFarm add-on called “Rebusdrop”. Users can monitor their cloud rendering jobs and can start, pause, and cancel all jobs at any time using this tool. Especially, the job will be rendered frame by frame, so it will automatically be downloaded to a folder chosen in advance. That will be wonderful and time-saving if your files are big.

However, a huge drawback of this render farm is related to the Price, Priority and Queue, which means the higher the priority is, the less time you have to queue and the more expensive price you have to pay. The job priority ranges from Standard (0.552 cent/Obh + 0.1 cent/Obh) to Priority 7(2.698 cent/Obh + 0.1 cent/Obh). If you choose the standard option, you might have to sit quietly, cross your fingers and see your files remain not to be rendered, even hours and don’t even know how long it will take. So if you are in a hurry and the farm is full, you will have no choice but to pay more and wait for your turn in the queue.

In addition, Rebus farm does not have many promotions or discounts. Currently they give customers volume discounts from 5% when recharging 500$ to 60% when recharging 50,000$. Rebusfarm pricing is considered as “pricey” when compared with other render farms. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that this render farm has the most expensive rendering cost (6 times more expensive than iRender) while the rendering speed is not the fastest.

Rebus Farm’s test results

+ The number of frames: 12 frames

+ The queue time: 0.45 minutes (highest priority)

+ The render time: 6.49 minutes (excluded the queue time)

+ Cost: $17 ( equivalent to 14.43 RP)

→ Rendering 1000 frames would take around 9 hours and $1, 416.

With powerful hardware configuration, unsurprisingly this render farm ranks number 2 out of 3 in Render Time. However, the rendering cost is the most expensive out of 3. Being the most expensive but not the fastest, Rebusfarm is not the best render farm for Octane but still in the top if you need a fast render solution.

In conclusion those above mentioned render farm including iRender, Ranch Computing and Rebusfarm are top rendefarms for Octane Rendering. In particular, the render cost on iRender is the cheapest (5-time cheaper than Ranch Computing), meanwhile, the render time on Ranch Computing is the shortest (5 time shorter than iRender). Therefore, if you have a straightforward project and small-to-medium scale and a decent budget, Ranch is suitable for you. On the other hand, iRender should be your choice when your project is larger, complicated or needs much customization or adjustment. The render time on iRender could be much faster than the test above if users could take advantage of multiple nodes simultaneously rather than using only 1 node as in our test.

We need to reconfirm again that when evaluating the price and cost, the queue time of Rebusfarm, and Ranch Computing is excluded and those render farms also say that the queue time is not being charged. However, by allowing users to choose the Priority render with higher price, users are directly paying to be rendered faster and are indirectly paying for this queue time. Therefore, queue time is also an important criterion for choosing the renderfarm. The less the better. Here in our test, both 3 renderfarms don’t make customers have to wait for a long time to render their project and more especially iRender has no queue time and users don’t have to pay more to be rendered faster.
